1. the electrical plugs are the same as in US America;

2. if you sit on the toilet it “starts,” and you have to shut if off if you don’t want any funny business;

3. the tap water in Tokyo tastes as good as the tap water in New York City.

but they use 100 VAC instead of 120 VAC (important if you have equipment with linear power supplies) and part of the country is on 50 Hz while the other part is on 60 Hz.

for as “advanced” as most westerners see Japan, there are a lot of parts of it which are surprisingly archaic. The first time I was there (10 years ago) when we went to buy train tickets, the guy at the counter calculated our change using a small abacus.

A fucking abacus.

Abacuses work! Just because something doesn’t have electrons and things doesn’t make it unacceptable.

Also, they don’t have that third pin for grounding. So if you’ve got a 3 prong power cable for your laptop, you’ll want to pop into a 100 yen shop and grab an adapter.

You’d think that the frequency thing would have been sorted out at some point. It created a pinch after the Tsunami because the 50Hz region was more eavily hit by the damage, and the nuclear plant shutdowns, and they couldn’t easily draw power from the south because of the need for additional conversion.

You don’t actually have to shut them down lol...

It “starts” when you sit on it, true, but you can just stand back up after and nothing will happen.

There is a Shakey’s Pizza in Shinjuku.

Many of the train stations have their own musical chimes when the doors open.

You can find ATMs at 7/11s.

Google Maps works really well for the trains.

Tokyo Disney is about 2/3 the cost of the US parks.

I plug it in, it works. That’s all I know.
